Not since Michael Crook aka Mr. fake DMCA, have we seen the internet rally against a griefer of such epic proportions. But this is new, this is personal, this guy is trying to mess with the Oprah.
Former Fish and Richardson patent attorney Scott Harris invented the 252 patent - a method of providing “excerpts from a digital book for preview prior to purchase, but prevents the reader from obtaining and reviewing the entire book prior to purchase.”
Harpo Productions is being sued for infringing on the 252 patent by giving a few sample pages of their books to Oprah’s Book Club members. According to reporter Joe Mullin of IP Law and Business, there are currently 3 Harris patents in play and the plaintiffs are looking for royalties from Symantec, Google Book Search, VW, Hyundai, Canon, OfficeMax and Toyota.
HONESTLY…
So Harris, let me get this straight. You patented previewing books, previewing cars, GPS and anti-spam technology. Egads! Not since Thomas Edison has the world seen such innovation. (And it’s rumored that he didn’t invent many of his patented inventions either)
Honestly, is this a joke? Scott Harris is too good of an example to be made by the EFF. These methods are ridiculous. He might as well patent farts.
As of this moment I’m looking for an IP lawyer that will help me patent the “method of patenting a commonly used technology and then successfully suing for royalty fees from major corporations.” Let’s call this the 253 or “infinity no returns” patent. My royalties are retroactive and the patent is enacted…NOW.
