I’ve decided that almost all New Year’s resolutions can be boiled down into 2 categories:
1. Be Hotter
2. Be More Interesting
True to form I’ve got the first one down with my commitments to quit smoking, cook more and exercise (like, ever). The second category commitment is one where I plan on being less of a blogger/recorder and more present.
For the last 2 years I’ve immersed myself in tech to the point that my only weekday activities have been web work and drinking free wine while talking about web work. I used to go to shows, make stuff, read fiction, volunteer at a homeless shelter and be on the board of the Fringe Festival. At no time during any of these activities did I ever think to myself, “This would make an awesome blog post.” I need to get back to being a human rather than an avatar.
While I know it’s counter-intuitive to blog my resolution about being less of a blogger, this is my written commitment. This year I plan on:
1. Craftsmanship: Make art/furniture to proudly display in my home;
2. Walk the Talk: Volunteer/fundraise for a good local NGO;
3. Explore: Reserve 2 nights per week for visual and tactile stimulation (Avoid tech and drinking);
4. Love: Tell friends regularly that I like them without clicking a thumbs up button;
5. Long Format Analysis: Read at least one novel per month; and,
6. Develop a Mantra: Humiliate myself daily to learn something new.
Resolutions: Be Less of a Blogger
