In the last month I’ve had 3 friends ask me to hold back on writing on their companies only to have other outlets scoop me. While I respect that some companies need time to get their ducks in a row, there also needs to be the realization that:
1. You will NEVER feel ready and I’m more likely to be give a sensitive and thorough review; and,
2. I am also doing a job - a job I won’t have very long if I keep missing scoops.
I’m trying to walk an ethical line here where I can maintain good relationships while still doing my job, but when it comes to news, as far as blog traffic goes, the early bird generally gets the worm. Blog traffic pays for advertising, which pays my meager writer’s salary and allows me to pay for food - food that many of you have enjoyed in the comfort of my home.
If you’re my friend and you’ve asked me to hold a story, I better be getting a fucking email if you can see one of my competitors fishing around. Otherwise, I’ll assume we aren’t friends and will act accordingly.
