The San Fran Music Tech Summit went from being a bunch of audiophiles talking about licensing issues, to a full-fledged

conference with artists and major labels clamoring to attend. This past Monday there was an amazing turn out and the event team including Brian Zisk, Shoshana Zisk, Todd Tate and Cass Phillips did a fantastic job.

As always I attended the “shiny-objects” panel featuring Smule founder Ge Wang to see what digital instrument interface he’s got for 2011. This year he demoed the Magic Fiddle iPad app. This demo, alongside demos from iPad DJ Rana Sobhany and MorphWhiz creator Jordan Rudess definitely set the tone for musicians to experiment on mobile devices.

I wrote a story for Mashable 2 years ago on Gadget Trends and the truth is, that when it comes to mobile instruments there are still so many more directions we can take this. Back then Japanese design group iida teamed up with Yamaha to create a special edition of phones and I’m still enamored with the magnetic drumstick phone, turntable transformer phone and multi-horn / harmonica / mixer model they created.
