benjohnson

In the last 20 days I’ve received approximately 10 different pitches from PR agencies using the words “on steroids” in the lead. I don’t like steroids. Ever since Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson was stripped of his gold medal in the men’s 100-metre at the 1988 Olympics, I have had a real hatred for steroids.

When you send me a press release that says, “It’s a new desktop Twitter client on steroids” or “it’s a social media aggregator on steroids” I get really pissed off. I think about how steroids are illegal in competition and how they have chronically debilitating affects on users. Are you trying to get me to review a product that is illegal, proven to incite liver failure and a major cause of the man boob? Because that would be irresponsible. Besides, just because your product is “on steroids” doesn’t mean it’s better than other products. If I were to take steroids it’s not as if I’d be an Olympic discus thrower.  I’d just be a random lady blogger with an enhanced beard and Adam’s apple. If you’re going to say your product is “on” something, choose something that people might consider positive like unicorns, rainbows or Barack Obama’s campaign team.
